Punchkarama is a personalized, cleansing and rejuvenation program. Which was originally created for royalty to promote longevity. Punchkarama is a program exclusive to Ayurveda. Punchkarama consists of medicated emesis (Vamana) to remove excess Kapha, therapeutic purgation (Viracana) to clear excess Pitta, medicated enema (Vasti) to eject excess Vata, nasal drops or snuffs (Nasya) for diseases of the head & neck and bloodletting (Raktamokshana) in case of blood disorders. Five purification procedures for removing accumulated toxins and other waste material in the body. As the humors and tissues are related closely to each other, this discharge procedure affects the tissues indirectly by the strong elimination of related humor. For example, the pronounced elimination of Kapha by herb induced emesis causes an effect on the nutrient tissue fluid pool, containing water and electrolytes, plasma, muscle, fat. Or the large release of Pitta by selective purgation similarly causes an indirect effect on the total colouring material in the body or blood. Vasti is somewhat different, as it is meant to nullify excess vata and contains warm oleation substances. During its long contact with the membrane of the large intestine, it separates layers of faecal matter and thus enhances better absorption, which is responsible for the ultimate nourishment of all tissues. Nasya in turn cleans the sinus and thereby improves the function of sense organs. Physical and mental diseases occur due to the vitiation of somatic doshas vata, pitta and kapha and due to mental doshas Rajas and Tamas. Volitional transgression, effect of time and senses are the three primary causes responsible for vitiation of biological and mental doshas. Food, drinks & environmental factors with similar properties to the doshas vitiates them and cause disease. Punchakarma's purificatory therapies balance out the three doshas, acting both as a curative and a preventive measure. Deep emotional healing is often experienced as a result of Punchkarama. People report a feeling of lightness in the body and clarity of mind, the weight naturally balances. The seven days of cleansing involves a daily approx. two-hour treatment consisting of a warm, nurturing oil massage given by two experienced therapists. This is followed by a relaxing steam, which enables the oils to penetrate and lubricate the tender bodily tissues. These seven tissues are called dhatus, they are the constituents that make up the physical body. In order from superficial to deep, they are: plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, nerve, and reproductive tissue. Each day of your Pancha Karma works deeper, from superficial to deep affecting nurturing, dislodging toxins from all 7dhatus. So that all people have a complete experience, we focus on Pancha Karma programs that are at a minimum of 7 days. We will and do offer less days, however technically it is not Pancha Karma.
These treatments prepare the body to eliminate the buildup of toxins that have accumulated over time in the tissues, as a result of of lifestyle choices, environmental pollution, and stresses. There are five actual cleansings in Pancha Karma. They are the cleansing of the nasal and sinus passages, or nasya; the cleansing of the colon, or Vasti; cleansing of small intestines, or Verechena; cleansing of the stomach and lungs, or Vamana, and cleansing of the blood known as Rakta Moksha. These will be done as appropriate in your program. The daily oil massage and steam treatment is necessary to facilitate the movement of the build up of toxins in the body. They are carried from the periphery, through the many channels that feed the bodily tissues, to the central part of the body and into the gastro-intestinal tract from where they can be safely eliminated. The individual constitution determines which cleansings are appropriate and necessary. Ayurveda looks at the cause of all disease as the result of an imbalance in the body, mind and/or spirit. When you treat the cause, imbalance, you treat the effect, disease. The purpose of Pancha Karma is to support the body in creating balance, and in that way disease is addressed. Ayurveda states that food is 60% of the medicine it uses to treat disease As part of your Pancha Karma experience, fresh food is prepared for you every day during your program.
